summary/abstract

Because amyloidosis is rare, the diagnosis is often delayed or the condition is not diagnosed. Therefore, it is difficult to know exactly how many people are affected by this disease. However, it is thought that around 4,000 people develop AL amyloidosis each year in the United States. The disease is typically diagnosed between the ages of 50 to 65, although people as young as 20 have also been diagnosed with AL amyloidosis.

Hereditary and AA amyloidosis are much less common than AL amyloidosis. The survival rate for AL amyloidosis depends on different factors, including how early it is diagnosed, if and how the heart is affected, and how well treatment works. It is important to remember that statistics on how many people are diagnosed with amyloidosis are an estimate. Talk with your doctor if you have any questions about this information.
