Joel Buxbaum, MD is a Professor of molecular medicine emeritus at The Scripps Research Institute and Consulting Chief Medical Officer at Protego Biopharma, La Jolla, California, United States. Dr. Buxbaum earned his M.D degree from Tufts University and trained clinically at the University of Utah Affiliated Hospitals after which he was a research associate at NIH. He did post-doctoral training at New York University (Immunology) and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Cell Biology).
He was an American Cancer Society Faculty Fellow in Cancer Research at the California Institute of Technology. He was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. Until 1999 he was Professor of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine. From 1999 until 2017 he was Professor of Molecular Medicine at the Scripps Research Institute.
He currently also holds a research appointment at the Scintillon Institute, San Diego, California and has been and continues to be a consultant for pharmaceutical companies developing new therapies for ATTR.
